The 13th Regiment of the New York National Guard, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., was initially organized as the 13th Regiment of the New York State Militia in 1847. During the Civil War, the 13th Regiment served in Annapolis and Baltimore, MD; Suffolk, VA; and Harrisburg, PA at various periods from 1861 to 1863, commanded by Colonels Abel Smith, Robert B. Arthur A. Hayward was born March 19, 1862 in Brockton, MA. He enlisted in the New York National Guard at the 13th Coast Artillery Armory in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 15, 1882 and rose in rank from corporal to color sergeant by 1889, and then from sergeant to master sergeant to sergeant major by 1922. Andersonville Prison, represented in the collection through its hospital records and registers, was located in southwest Georgia and operated for 15 months between 1864 and 1865. The site was used by the Confederate Army as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured Union soldiers. At the time of its closure, almost 13,000 Union soldiers had died at Andersonville.
